Frequently Asked Questions

Do you just work with children? We welcome both adults and children at the centre, and can even organise custom activities where whole family groups can get out onto the water together. Generally the minimum age we work with is 9, we can on certain activities work with slightly younger people on private bookings.

Do I need to be able to swim?  We do not exclude those who cannot swim. We ask whether participants can swim on our bookings paperwork so that we can factor it into our session planning. Everyone who heads out onto the water will be wearing a buoyancy aid (life jacket) to keep them afloat in the event that they fall in.

Can I hire a boat or launch my own? Sadly we don’t hire out boats to members of the public, this is due to the bylaws of the reservoir. All activity on the reservoir must be through one of the recognised Clubs or centres on the water. (Phoneix Outdoor Centre & Canoe Club, Welsh Harp Sailing Club, Wembly Sailing Club & Sea Cadets – Welsh Harp Boat Station)

Does the club / centre provide private lessons? The Phoenix Outdoor Centre can provide private lessons at any mutually convenient time, check out our Custom Activities page.

Can I use my own buoyancy aid or equipment? We are more than happy for people to use their own equipment on our sessions if it is appropriate and meets our minimum safety standards, we will check this before use.

Facilities for people with disabilities We do not currently have disabled access or toilets / changing rooms, but will accommodate you as best as we are able.  Please speak to us to discuss your requirements. We are planning a new building with all the bells and whistles……and disabled access.

What is the cancellation policy for activity bookings? We reserve the right to retain your payment in full or in part, in the case of non-attendance or in the event of a cancellation with less than 14 days-notice. Activities can be affected by severe weather conditions.  If Phoenix Canoe Club or Outdoor Centre has to cancel your session due to the weather conditions or for any other reason, we will offer you a full refund or reschedule your booking.

Do you need any coaches or volunteers? We are always on the lookout for qualified coaches to help with the activities we run and volunteers to help with the operation and maintenance of the site. Please get in touch to find out more.
