The Welsh Harp reservoir and Open Space was designated as a SSSI in the 1950’s in recognition of the breeding wildfowl and overwintering birds as well as its variety of plant species growing along the water margins. The reservoir was constructed almost 200 years ago to provide water to the Grand Union Canal and covers 123 acres. As well as being an area teaming in wildlife and fauna, there are a number of problems that have built up over the years through neglect and lack of funding. The water suffers with silt deposits and litter and there are a number of organisations involved in its upkeep, as well as voluntary groups that campaign and provide conservation services to the area. Friends of the Welsh Harp have a base at Phoenix Canoe Club and run monthly litter picks and volunteers are always welcome to help keep the Welsh Harp clear of litter – all tools and refreshments provided, just bring old, warm clothes and boots. We also support FoTWH on some litter picks by picking from boats on the water, accessing litter and debris that has built up around the shore.
